Dim sum is more than a list of dishes. It is a social meal built around tea, sharing and choosing several small plates for the table.

Start with tea

Tea is central to the meal. Ask about the available varieties if you are unsure, and do not worry about choosing the most expensive option.

Order for the table

Choose a mix of steamed, baked and fried dishes. Two or three items at a time can be easier than ordering everything at once.

Classic first choices

Har gow, siu mai, cheung fun and steamed buns are approachable choices. Add something unfamiliar once you have a few favourites.

Pace yourself

Dim sum is meant to be shared. Leave room for later dishes rather than filling the table immediately.

Be flexible

Popular dishes can sell out, especially later in a service. Treat the menu as a starting point rather than a checklist.
